Every Depo has a file tree on the side of the window. You and your agents work in the same files: agents with the file_ops tool read and write them, and you open, edit and save them here. Markdown files (.md) open in a Live Preview editor. It is a plain Markdown file on disk, but while you edit it looks like the finished page. Other files open in a code editor.

Make files and folders

Click + above the tree, press N in the tree for a new file or Shift+N for a new folder, or right-click a folder. A name field appears in the tree, where the new item will sit.
  • Enter creates it. Escape cancels. Clicking away keeps the name you typed.
  • Type a path to make folders on the way: ideas/q4.md creates ideas and the note inside it.
  • A new file opens in the editor, ready to type.
The new item goes in the folder you selected. With a file selected, it goes beside that file. With nothing selected, it goes beside the file you have open, or at the top of the Depo if no file is open.

Rename

Select a file or folder and press F2, or right-click it and choose Rename. The name turns into a field in place. For a file, the name is selected up to its extension, so typing replaces plan and keeps .md. Enter renames, Escape cancels, and clicking away keeps the new name. If the name is taken, the field says so and stays open.

Write Markdown

A Markdown file has three views, at the top right of the editor:
  • Edit is Live Preview. Headings, bold, links, lists, quotes, tables and code blocks show formatted as you type. The Markdown marks (#, **, [ ]( ), >) appear only on the line or word your cursor is in.
  • Source shows the plain Markdown text.
  • View is read-only, for reading.
In Edit:
  • Click a checkbox in a task list (- [ ]) to tick it. The file changes to - [x].
  • Click a table to edit its Markdown. Click outside it to see the table again.
  • Click a link to open it. Hold Alt and click to edit the link instead.
  • Cmd+B makes the selection bold. Cmd+I makes it italic.
  • Fenced code blocks are coloured for JavaScript, TypeScript, Python, JSON, HTML and CSS.
Write [[ and the name of another note to link to it. A list of your notes appears as you type; pick one and the link closes itself. Click a link to open the note. A link with a heading opens the note at that heading. A link finds its note by name anywhere in the Depo, so [[Launch plan]] finds notes/Launch plan.md. If two notes share a name, write the path: [[notes/Launch plan]]. A link to a note that does not exist yet looks faded. Click it to create the note next to the one you are in. A path in the link makes folders on the way: [[ideas/Someday]] from notes/plan.md creates notes/ideas/Someday.md. Any unsaved changes save before Porto follows a link.

Embed notes and images

Put ! before a link, on a line of its own, to show the other note inside this one:
The first shows the whole note. The second shows only the Checklist section. Click the title to open the note. Click the box to edit the embed line. Embed an image the same way, anywhere in a line. Add a width in pixels after a bar:
Image paths start from the folder of the note you are in.

Callouts, highlights, tags and comments

A quote that starts with [!type] becomes a coloured box:
Types include note, info, tip, success, question, warning, danger, example and quote. Leave out the title and the box is titled with its type.
  • ==text== highlights text.
  • #launch is a tag. A # at the start of a heading is not.
  • %%text%% is a comment. It stays in the file and shows dimmed.
